When I was young...
One of my sterling youthful experiences, believe it or not, was riding the Salt Grass Trail with the Marks family, when I was seventeen. The old trail had been morphed for trailriding purposes and extended from Bellville to downtown Houston. My brother and I skipped school, with nodding permission, to ride our horses along with old friends who were the founders of the trail and famous longhorn breeders. This was the number one wagon, the lead wagon on the trail, an authentic old chuck wagon from the LH7 Ranch in Barker. We started out bunking in it, but it was not very comfortable. Each morning at sunrise a truck came by blasting Eddie Arnold's "Cattle Call." Bro Rey is still out, he was always hard to wake up in the mornings.
When I got back, I painted this watercolor from memory.
